Puerto Real is a university and industrial city located in the Bay of Cádiz. It stands out for its exquisite cuisine and a natural environment of great beauty. Its spots are full of history and culture. Thanks to this Travel Guide to Puerto Real you can find all the activities and the best travel tips for your trip.
It was founded in 1483 by the Catholic Monarchs, in need of a royal port in the area. Surrounded by marshes and pine forests, its old town has been declared Historic Ensemble. It retains its primitive urban layout, an almost perfect grid of typical houses with artistic covers and beautiful patios.
Some of its most prominent monuments are the Priory Church of San Sebastián, in Renaissance and Baroque style; the Conventual Church of La Victoria and that of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, popularly called San José, from the 18th century. Callejón del Arco; the Food Market and the Caja del Agua (all from the 18th century). In Caño del Trocadero, the ruins of the Castle of San Luis are preserved, which resisted Napoleon’s attack during the War of Independence. However, it was destroyed years later by the Hundred Thousand Sons of St. Louis, in commemoration of which the famous Paris Square was given this name.
Moreover, you can breath here a lively cultural life because of its numerous cultural centres and two theatres: the Main Theatre and the Summer Theatre. It is also famous for its exquisite cuisine based primarily on its estuary fish and seafood.
To its two beaches, Río San Pedro and La Cachucha, the town adds a natural environment of great value: the Puerto Real Endorheic Basin Natural Reserve. At certain times, several species of birds can be sighted. On the other hand, the Pinar de las Canteras is the real green area of the Bay, as well as recreational area of the city. Crossed by trails, it is excellent for walking.
Main Activities: Nature, Cuisine, Beaches, Active Tourism, Culture.
